New Poet President for Irish Republic

Campaigner, poet, politician - 70 year old Michael D Higgins is widely regarded as a principled, eloquent and passionate public figure and statesman and has been elected the ninth President of the Irish Republic.

Higgins had 39.6 percent of the first preference votes under Ireland's complicated electoral system.
Sean Gallagher, an entrepreneur who won fame from the reality TV show "Dragons Den", was on 28.5 per cent and Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness, the former IRA paramilitary commander who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, on 13.7 per cent.
There were four other candidates including singer Dana.

Michael D. Higgins has two published volumes of poetry and is a former Minister of Arts. He is also well known for his support of human rights.

A few lines lines from his poem “Memory” set the scene well:

We make an affirmation.
The stuff of hope beckons.
Out of the darkness we step,
and blink into the new light.

Uachtaráin Michael Daniel Higgins.
Or President Michael D – to you and me.
