Three offerings for you here :
The ship called the Plassey ran aground 50 years ago and lies rusting on the shore of Inis Oirr, County Clare, Ireland. ( My birth county !)
Fr. Conall O'Cuinn SJ looks at the Church today in terms of a beached ship and suggests that this might evoke a call to become a Jesuit.
The beautiful song sung by Glen Hansard and Marketa Inglova running in the background of the previous video is called Falling Slowly from the Oscar Award winning film "Once" but it's not easy to hear all the words so I've put the lyrics and a separate video of the song here :
I can see how the words of the song may fit the complex emotions that a person wrestles with as they hear a call or a vocation to the priesthood or in fact any type of ministry.
Lyrics
I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along
As I was listening to the mix for Glen Hansard on You Tube this extraordinary song "Say It To Me Now"below came up by chance and it struck me how well the lyrics could apply to "Doubting" Thomas in this Sunday's gospel who could have sung this too !
Warning : you may have to turn the volume down as the song gets into gear.
It's not an easy song to listen to.
It fairly wreaks of the desperation and fear that Thomas may have felt after the death of Jesus as he reflects on the tragedy that has happened and he realises that he had never really understood who Jesus really was while he was alive.
He ruefully dwells on the fact that Jesus took his hand when he was alive but he, Thomas did not understand .
The news that He had risen from the dead was bewildering and frightening and to top it all he had missed the appearance of the risen Jesus to the rest of the disciples as they hid behind closed doors.
The words of the song suggest that Thomas expects Jesus to be angry at him for running away at his trial and crucifixion and both his despair and defiance come through in the words Say It To Me Now.
Of course the song does not reflect the whole story because we know what happened next... but the rest of the story is on Sunday. More reflections to come....
