The Human Condition

This is a follow on from my post this morning here.

Bits and pieces from here and there are running through my head and heart today,
fragments trying to make something whole from shattered pieces.
I'm not even sure if it helps.

"We are one, after all, you and I; together we suffer, together exist, and forever will recreate each other."
Pierre Teilhard De Chardin.

 Into Our Several Hells

There is evidence that our society is going to hell in a handbasket
The hell holes are east to spot in the news
and we even in our privilege
know various degrees and signs of hell

But we confess that you are the God
who has descended into our several hells
submitted
suffered
been present
and then raised in power to new life

We care not so much about your ascent into heaven
as we do about your restoration of the earth.

You are the God who raised others even as you ascended in new power
So raise us this day from all our negativities
So raise our cities this day from their cruel failures
So raise our world this day from its several hells
of brutality and uncaring
by Robert Hodgell

So raise us to new praise and glad obedience
You who descend and who are raised in splendour
Hallelujah. Amen.

from "Awed To Heaven, Rooted To Earth
Prayers of Walter Brueggemann."

Then I came across this prayer from Godspace by Christine Sine with its companion cartoon from the genius Michael Leunig. Some days that's all we can do.

God help us to change.
To change ourselves and to change our world.
To know the need for it. To deal with the pain of it.
To feel the joy of it.
To undertake the journey without understanding the destination.
The art of gentle revolution.

Amen.
