List of twenty two new Cardinals appointed by Pope Benedict XVI today:
- Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples;
- Manuel Monteiro de Castro, Major Penitentiary of the Roman Church; I didn't know we had Catholic prisons
- Santos Abril y Castelló, Archpriest of St Mary Major;
- Antonio Maria Veglió, President of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and Refugees;
- Giuseppe Bertello, President of the Government of the Vatican City-State;
- Francesco Coccopalmerio, President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts
- Joao Braz de Aviz, Prefect of the Congregation for Religious;
- Edwin O'Brien, Grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre; What the heck is that ? (At first I nearly choked as I thought it read Edna O'Brien.)
- Domenico Calcagno, President of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See;
- Giuseppe Versaldi, President of the Prefecture for the Economic Affairs of the Holy See;
- George Alencherry, Major-Archbishop of Erkugnalam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malybars; That's one to definitely find out more about.
- Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto;
- Dominik Duka OP, Archbishop of Prague;
- Willem Jacobus Eijk, Archbishop of Utrecht;
- Giuseppe Betori, Archbishop of Florence;
- Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York;
- Rainer Maria Woelki, Archbishop of Berlin;
- John Tong Hon, Bishop of Hong Kong
...and the designates older than 80 -- so unable to enter a
conclave but who are given the red hat as an "honorary" gesture:
- Lucien Muresan, Major archbishop of Fagaras and Alba Julia of the Romanians;
- Fr Julien Ries, Belgian historian/anthropologist of religion;
- Prosper Grech OSA, Maltese Biblical scholar;
- Karl Josef Becker SJ
This is the fourth consistory of B16's pontificate and the official appointments will be on 18-19 February, the last weekend before the start of Lent.
This leaves the College of Cardinals 13 clerics short of the maximum 120 members under age 80 who may participate in a conclave.
On grounds of age alone, another 11 seats in the electoral group come open over the remainder of this year, with 10 more slots appearing during 2013.
In terms of notable omissions, neither the new Archbishop of Manila in
the Philippines, Luis Antonio Tagle, nor the Archbishop of Westminster
in the U.K., Vincent Nichols, were on the list.
In both cases, the
informal rule that a new cardinal is not created until the retired
cardinal of that archdiocese turns 80 may have been in force, as both of
the previous incumbents won’t pass the 80 threshold until August 2012.
Cardinal Designate Timothy Dolan from New York does the Today Show in this video
On Thursday 27 May 2010, Saint Patrick's College, Maynooth, in
cooperation with the Irish Bishops' Conference, hosted a seminar to mark
the Year for Priests.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, delivered the keynote address entitled God is the only treasure people desire to find in a priest.

Dolan on Homosexuality
Dolan has often dipped into controversial political waters, most notably with his polarizing views on gay marriage.
Last September, Dolan wrote a stern letter to President Obama warning that his policies could potentially "precipitate a national conflict between church and state of enormous proportions."
Dolan has gone further by describing gay marriage as a product of "Orwellian social engineering," belittling gay rights as a "chic cause."
This is despite several polls that show a majority of USA Catholics have strong support for gay rights. See here
